Homebrew Canus lupus familiaris Species Details

Usually known as "Man's best friend". Most Canus are kept as slaves, pets, or mercenaries for most of their life, but some find freedom from their masters through escaping, good behavior, or kindness. Canus are widely considered inhumane, and therefore don't have human rights, though this may be untrue for certain regions. In regions where they aren't considered human, they are considered "attack dogs", "dog maids", or sometimes even simple "house pets".

If the creature can hear you, it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of you until the end of your next turn. On subsequent turns, you can use your action to extend the duration of this effect on the frightened creature until the end of your next turn. This effect ends if the creature can no longer hear you or is more than 30 feet away from you. The DC is equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus. If it succeeds or the effect ends, the creature is immune to the effects of this ability for 24 hours.

Scent

Scent: A Canus's exquisite sense of smell allows them to pinpoint their foes. A Canus can detect opponents by scent within 30 feet. If the opponent is upwind, the range increases to 60 feet; if downwind, it drops to 15 feet. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at twice the ranges noted above. Overpowering scents, such as skunk musk, can be detected at triple normal range. When a Canus detects a scent, the exact location of the source is not revealed — only its presence somewhere within range. The Canus can take a move action to note the direction of the scent. Whenever the Canus comes within 5 feet of the source, the Canus pinpoints the source’s location.
