Homebrew Athasian Mul Species Details

Muls are half-dwarves, descended from the forced union of a human and a dwarf. They have the build, agility, and mental flexibility of humankind, coupled with the physical resilience and endurance of dwarves, a rare combination of qualities that makes Muls more than a simple blend of the two races. Because they are strong, tough, quick, and blessed with fantastic endurance, muls are highly prized as slaves.

The Slave Race

In fact, most muls are born into slavery. Owners recognize the muls' assets as gladiators and laborers, and so order the births of as many muls as can be managed within the ranks of their slaves. Breeding Muls, while exorbant and lucrative, are often lethal for both the Mother and offspring. Conception is difficult and often aided by the use of dark magic. Due to the violent nature of their births, Muls are born sterile —they cannot perpetuate their kind. Some theorize this sterility as being purposeful, so that the Mul would not overpopulate and seek to overwhelm their Masters. 

Mul are born and raised under the whip and heel of their masters. They are bitter and unsympathetic to others, relying on no-one else to help them in thier blighted existance, and only accepting the help of those they could fully trust. They are trained from an early age to raise a blade, to both defend themselves and earn their masters coin in bloodied arena combat.

Strength and Endurance

The Mul is one of the stronger humanoid races of the Tablelands. The joint genetics of Human and Dwarf has given them greater fortitude and strength, capable of exerting themself far beyond the normal limits of most other races they work with. Their broad frames are basically devoid of fat and their statures can sometimes even reach up to 7 feet, weighing upwards of 250 pounds of labour made muscle. Muls tend to share the characteristics of protrusive brow and cheek ridges, sharp pointed ears that are pinned back and complete lack of hair. They also range between light copper and dark copper - coloured skin. 

Mul Names

Muls, being generally slaves or gladiators, have given names. These names would tend to be harsh toned and, in lacking a family name, Muls would use a place for a surname. Something a-kin to "Harask of Nibenara".

Male Names: Aram, Athalak, Bost, Darok, Duurn, Erekard, Garst, Marok, Morg, Tomak, Uskar, Zedarth, Zorus.

Female Names: Aisa, Brithis, Callia, Elina, Himithisa, Laivi, Naris, Raina, Saditha, Urse, Zerima, Zora.

Muls are given the combined physical attributes of their parent races, with years in the harsh wastes granting them traits of their own.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Relentless Resiliance

When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

Powerful Physique

You gain proficiency in the Athletics skill. 

Dwarven Heritage

Muls have the tough resilience of their Dwarven heritage. You have advantage on saving throws against poison, and you have resistance against poison damage.
