Homebrew Awakened Dog Species Details
Awakened Dogs were former pets and companions of powerful wizards. Their intelligence was raised by strong arcane magic.
Awakened Dog Traits
Is doggoAbility Score Increase
Your Charisma score increases by two, and your Strength score increases by one.
Age
Awakened Dogs live slightly longer lifespans than normal dogs, due to the magic flowing through them. An awakened dog reaches adulthood at around 1 year old, and can live to 30 years.
Alignment
Awakened Dogs are, like normal dogs, extremely loyal. They tend towards lawful neutral, but their alignment is mostly determined by their master's upbringing.
Size
Awakened Dogs come in varying shapes and sizes, but they are usually larger breeds. Between 2 and 4 feet tall, and weighing 150-250 lbs.
Your size is Medium.
Speed
Awakened Dogs are swifter than most bipedal races. Your walking speed is 35ft.
Awakened Familiar
While you cannot physically speak, your master imbued you with magical energy to allow you to communicate with those around you.
You can speak telepathically to any creature you share a language with within 60ft, though they cannot respond telepathically unless they can already do so otherwise.
Bite
Your teeth are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Heightened Senses
You have exceptional senses of hearing and smell. You gain advantage on any Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.
Calming Presence
Your presence is calming to other non-hostile animals and humanoids.
You have proficiency in the Animal Handling and Persuasion skills.
Canine Pounce
You can burst forth with a sudden rush of strength.
When you Grapple an opponent, they must make an additional Strength(Athletics) check, or be knocked Prone. The DC for this check is equal to 10+your Strength modifier.
Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Languages
You can "speak", read, and write Common, and one additional language of your choice. This could be a language your former master knew.

Posted Jun 28, 2018the only problem i think it has is that bite should be 2d4+mod since dogs and wolves have that as damage in the monster manual. Tbh dog are either going to have one weapon in their mouth or they are going to bite so it needs to be competitive with a with such weapons.

Posted Jun 29, 2018The intent was to keep it in line with other natural weapons, which are all either 1d4 or 1d6 for playable races.

Posted Aug 25, 2018Jaw holder: you may affix a weapon, shield, spellbook, or arcane focus to one this holders two "hands". You can attach a two handed or versatile weapon to both "hands" to be able to use in the specific way you wish. If you have two light weapons affixed to the holder (one in each hand) and you attack using one of them as your action, you may attack with the other one as an "off hand attack" as your bonus action. You may not use the thrown property of any weapon affixed without throwing the entire hold, and even then you do so with disadvantage. Ranged weapons without the thrown property do not function at all while affixed to the holder. It takes one minute to swap out an item in one of the "hands" for another item. If a hand is free you may summon an item into its grasp like an eldritch knights bonded weapon, a warlocks pact weapon, or a spell that requires a hand like flame blade or shadow blade.

Posted Oct 10, 2018I think when I made this I based it off the half-elf, which itself is probably one of the strongest official races. So that might be it.
I think it's pretty comparable to say, Tabaxi, but the volo's races are a bit wonky themselves in terms of how many abilities you get.

Posted Apr 30, 2019It's missing a few things from other dog builds like claw 1d6+ str mod; dark vision which dogs should have probably equal to that of other races (60ft); sub races: Hellhound, Servant, Domestic, Hunting; and the quick learner feature which halves the time to learn proficiencies which would balance out the young age at which they die. I'd leave some of the ability score increases to the subraces but that's just me.
