Homebrew Arachnoid Species Details
I have never seen quite something like that. Three.. people, I suppose, watching the moon and the sky ontop of a small rocky hill. One looked just like a human would, just with a darker skin. The second had three arms and was playing with something sticky and shiny in their fingers, as if making something while watching, like a human child would fiddle with something. The third.. Was a monster. From waist up it was humanoid enough with three pairs of arms like the other, but waist down.. I have never seen such a monstrous body, like a swollen spider. They had their backs to me, not noticing me. I thanked Pelor for his grace and ran.
- Tidian Brightshade, cleric of Pelor
A race born to inhabit dark corners and caves. Arachnoids range from spiderlike, to fully humanoid looking. They can have anything between 2 to 8 eyes with a sharp almond shape, colours varying between dark shades of all other colours. Rarely do they have bright coloured eyes. As a result, their pupils are nearly invisible but for a close inspection. They tend to have dark or brown colours of hair and skin to merge better in the darkness.
As far as other general physique goes, the arachnoids vary widely. Some have spiderlike bodies, others look just like normal humans. They all tend to have three pairs of arms but can absorb two pairs to hide and blend into the crowds. Their fingers are long and slender and they usually have naturally sharp nails that help with dexterity but aren't of much use in combat. Those of the arachnoid who have spiderlike bodies make their webs and silk the usual spider way. But those with humanoid bodies can use their spit to create web and silk. The quality of their silk changes as they age, the quality steadily improving as age allows them to finesse with the composition. Thus no two arachnoids produce exact same silk. They are well proficient in making rope, silken clothing, weaving and dyeing their silk.
Arachnoids tend to be peaceful and more towards neutral or chaotic alignment. They live in their own communities mostly, but some of the more humanoid bodied live among the humans and other races hiding their origin from others. They gravitate towards working as weavers and seamstresses and tailors, or to jobs that have something to do with fibres. When in their own communities, those who align to evil are cast out of the community. That would explain why if asked about them from other races they might say that the arachnoids are evil creatures of darkness, as the cast outs are those they would know about for sure.
Arachnoid Traits
As a result of their blood and upbringing, the arachnoid have the following traits:Ability Score Increase
Your body has adapted to being dextrous and nimble. While some of your race are more warriorlike than the rest, your body isn't built for strength. (+2 to Dexterity, -1 to Strength)
Size
Due to the variation in the type of arachnoid your bloodline is from, your size is either Medium or Small. Generally speaking, your height is between that of an eight-year-old human child to a tall adult human, between 2 and 6 feet. Some are known to be taller but they are much in minority. Most of your race are on the small side of the variation.
Age
The arachnoid tend to live longer the more humanoid they are. Those who have the most humanoid bodies live to around 100 to 120 years, those with more spiderlike bodies might live as few as eight years, though exceptions have been known to happen.
Speed
With your dexterity and light body, your walking speed is 30 ft. And thanks to your arachnoid origin you have a climbing speed of 30 ft and can climb almost anything as easily as walking.
Alignment
Your people are peaceful and calm on the whole. Most of you tend towards chaotic alignment, some on the neutral spectrum. Very rarely does any of your people go towards the evil side of alignment, and those who do are cast out of the communities for putting them all in danger. As a result, most other races think of your kind as evil aligned.
Darkvision
You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions thanks to your arachnoid blood. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Natural Silk
Thanks to your natural ability to create silk, you are proficient with Weaver's Tools. You can use the Weaver's Tools to create things from your silk. Altogether you have 100 units of silk to use per long rest. You can use the units as follows:
- 5 units for 5 ft of silk thread
- 10 units for 5 ft of sterilized silk thread
- 10 units for web movement of 30 ft
- 15 units for 50 ft of silken rope
- 25 units per 3 ft of silk fabric
- 50 units for shelter for one person
- 100 units for shelter for four people
Spidery movement
When moving across rough terrain you can use 10 units of your silk to create a web over rough terrain to pass without penalty. This web forms a 5 foot wide 30 ft long line in the shape of your design.
Languages
Your people haven't developed a language other than a form of clicking that can be counted as Thieve's Cant. But because many of you live among other races, you have learned Common and two other languages appropriate to your area.
Poisonous Blood
Your arachnid blood allows you to shrug off the effects of poison and gives you immunity. You can also create one small vial of poison per long rest, enough for one-time use. Roll on the following table to determine the effects of the poison.
- Incessant tingling and itching for 5 minutes
- Hallucinations of bubbles, flowers, and shimmering light for 10 minutes
- Knock out for an hour
- Acute indigestion
- [roll]2d4[/roll] Poison damage
- Paralysis for 10 minutes
