Homebrew Animated Garment Species Details

You are a cloak, coat, or scarf that has somehow become animated, likely through magic or supernatural possession.

Animated Garment Traits

As an animated garment, you have the following traits:

Ability Score Increase

Increase an ability score of your choice by 2.

Size

Your size is appropriate for your intended wearer, either Small or Medium.

Speed

You (super)naturally hover at the height you might be if worn.  You have a fly speed of 30 feet.

False Appearance

While you remain motionless, you are indistinguishable from a normal non-animated garment.

Textacular

You are made of cloth.  This has a variety of benefits and drawbacks.

  • You are vulnerable to fire damage.
  • You are immune to even magic bludgeoning damage.
  • You are immune to poison damage and the poisoned condition.
  • You don't need to eat, drink or breathe.
  • You can't wear armor.
  • When subject to magical mending, you heal hit points equal to 1d6 plus the caster's Intelligence Modifier.

Damage Transfer

While grappling a creature, you take only half the damage dealt to you, and the creature grappled by you takes the other half.

Topologically Interesting

Your flexible nature makes you a difficult target to hit at range, but makes it especially hard for you to perform feats of strength, to swim, and to escape the grip of an adversary.  However, it also gives you the ability to hang on tenaciously when you want to.

  • You have resistance to ranged attacks.
  • You have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks to initiate or maintain grapples, but disadvantage on all other Strength (Athletics) checks.
  • You may attempt to initiate a grapple as a bonus action.
  • You also gain access to a Smother attack, which on a hit grapples a Medium or smaller target within 5 ft. of you.  Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, blinded, at risk of suffocation, and takes bludgeoning damage on its turn equal to 1d6 plus your Strength modifier.

Languages

You can read and write Common and another language known by your creator, but you cannot speak except through spending an action doing charades.
