Homebrew Automaton Species Details

These intriguing constructs appear all over the multiverse, as either an advanced mechanical marvel, or an arcane construct given free will. Regardless, automatons rival most humanoids in their aptitude for change, as well as hold a surprisingly similar ability to feel emotion and change.

Automaton Traits

Your automaton character has the following traits. A few of the traits give you a choice; consider how your choice reflects the purpose for which your character was built.

Built for Success

You were designed to be an unerring machine, and even in disregarding that, you just cant seem to fail in whatever prime directive you choose. You can add a d4 to one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw you make, and you can do so after seeing the d20 but before the effects of the roll are resolved. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest

True Life

If the mending spell is cast on you, you can expend a Hit Die, roll it, and regain a number of hit points equal to the roll plus your Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 hit point). In addition, your creator designed you to benefit from common spells that preserve life but that normally don’t affect Constructs: cure wounds, healing word, and spare the dying

Ability Score Increase

You may increase an ability score by 2, and one other ability score of your choice increases by 1.

Age

A typical Automaton is between two and 80 years old, though, any and all Automatons have shown no signs of deterioration due to age. You are immune to magical aging effects.

Size

Your size is Medium or Small (your choice). To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:

Size modifier = 2d6

Height = 2 feet (or) 5 feet + 10 inches + your size modifier in inches

Weight in pounds = 110 (or) 270 + (4 × your size modifier)

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Constructed Resilience

You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits:

  • You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
  • You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
  • You are immune to disease.
  • You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Brief Stasis

When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.

Mechanical Protection

. Your body is unnaturally strong and you are encased in thin metal or some other durable material. While you aren’t wearing armor, your base Armor Class is 13 + your Dexterity modifier. Additionally, if you are to don armor you gain some benefits.

  • You can don only armor with which you have proficiency. To don armor other than a shield, you must incorporate it into your body over the course of 1 hour, during which you remain in contact with the armor. To doff armor, you must spend 1 hour removing it. You can rest while donning or doffing armor in this way.
  • While you live, the armor incorporated into your body can’t be removed against your will.

Specialized Design

Despite whatever current decisions you have made for yourself, your form was designed for a purpose. You gain two skill proficiencies of your choice.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
