Homebrew Donkey Centaur Species Details

Out in the plains of the feywilds, herds of centaurs roam, sometimes with an even rarer sight. Donkey centaurs are smaller variants than most centaurs but are often sweeter in nature. Not many scholars have seen whole herds of exclusively donkey centaurs but ancient runes depict this was once a common appearance in the fey. Nobody knows why they are now so rare but luckily it appears they are becoming more common once again due to efforts from the spring and summer courts.

Nature’s Cavalry

Centaurs have the upper bodies, down to the waist, of muscular humans, displaying all the human variety of skin tones and features. Their ears are akin to a donkey's, but their faces are wider and squarer than those of elves. Below the waist, they have the bodies of small donkeys, normally greyish-brown in colour with a prominent dark dorsal stripe however they can be a variety of natural colours appearing on donkeys on the material plane. Their hair and tails are often in a style resembling their herd's traditions.

The upper bodies of centaurs are comparable to human torsos in size, and their lower equine bodies average about 4 feet tall at the withers. Donkey centaurs are uncomfortable to ride due to their stocky nature but are natural load bearers. Small creatures will have an easier time riding on their backs, however.

Affinity for Nature

Centaurs have an affinity for the natural world. Centaurs celebrate life and growth, and the birth of a foal is always cause for festivities, throwing great feasts or hunting parties. They will often bless the foal under the moonlight in ceremonial colours that vary from herd to herd. If you are ever able to witness this occasion, it is said to have the forces of nature singing in tune with the ceremony, allowing the young ones to be guided by the weave and the spirit of nature itself.

Herd Nature

Donkey Centaurs are herd creatures by nature. They love travelling in large groups of centaurs and/or adventurers. Due to their kind nature, they often will provide support and morale to their herd. Most creatures that have heard of these fey will often seek them out as allies due to their kind nature and tremendous loyalty. They feel a close kinship with wild animals, perhaps because of their own donkey-like bodies, and delight in the feeling of running alongside herds and packs of other beasts.

Centaur Names

Centaurs’ given names are passed down through family lines. The name bestowed on a new foal is typically the name of the most recently deceased family member of the same gender, keeping alive the memory — and, the centaurs believe, some shard of the spirit — of the departed. Centaurs don’t use family names, but they wear symbols that represent their family membership. These symbols might include graphical representations of plants or animals, printed mottoes, braids and beads worn in the hair and tail, or even specific patterns of woven fabric.
