Homebrew Winter Wolf Species Details

Deadly predators with minds sharp as a blade, winter wolves wander the icy terrain of the arctic regions.

Winter wolves are larger than their forest-dwelling kin, with frosty white fur and piercing blue or silver eyes. Some specimins have glittering ice crystals incorporated into their fur. They are as intelligent as a humanoid, or maybe a little more, and capable of speech. They usually travel in packs, hunting game and the occasional stray humanoid.

Winter Wolf Traits

As a winter wolf, you have a variety of monstrous traits.

Ability Scores Increase

Your strength or dexterity score increases by 2, and your constitution score increases by 1.

Creature Type

You count as a monstrosity instead of a humanoid.

Arctic Resistance

You have resistance to cold damage and you are acclimated to extreme cold.

Pack Tactics

You have advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of your allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.

Freezing Breath

When you take the attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your weapon attacks with a breath weapon attack. With this feature, you can exhale a blast of freezing air in a 15 ft. cone. Any creature caught in the blast must succeed on a dexterity saving throw (the DC equals 8 + your constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the target creatures take 2d10 cold damage and half as much on a success. Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

Bite

Your fanged maw counts as a natural weapon with the finesse property. On hit, your bite deals 2d4 piercing damage. This damage replaces the usual bludgeoning damage dealt by your unarmed strikes.

Beastly Build

You are restricted by the animalistic shape and build of your body.

You have no hands, and therefore you are restricted from using weapons, handheld items, tools, and magic foci. This does not include the use of potions. You may wear armor if it can fit your body shape or if it is specifically tailored to you. You can be outfitted with a saddle over any armor you are wearing, and you can be used a a mount by a small or smaller creature.

Your body type isn't a complete drawback, as your powerful build makes you stronger than other creatures. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC equals 13 + your dexterity modifier.

Class Restrictions

Because of your nature, it is harder for your to learn and use the abilities that certain classes offer.

You are restricted from all classes but the following: Ranger, fighter, barbarian, and monk. Certain subclasses and features may or may not be appropriate, ask your DM before choosing a subclass. For example, a DM may be willing to lift the dwarves-only restriction on the battlerager barbarian subclass if they think that it would suit a savage winter wolf wanting to wear spiked armor, while they might refuse a winter wolf eldritch knight because of the winter wolf's spellcasting limitations.

Languages

You can speak, read, and understand Common and Giant. In addition, you can speak and understand Winter Wolf, and you can effectively communicate with wolves and most other canine creatures. You cannot write.
