Homebrew Batling Species Details

Deep within caves and dark caverns, these creatures appear to be humanoid in form, and bat-like on all others. Only being medium-sized at largest (commonly the alpha or cheif/colony leader) Batlings don't mingle as much with the outside world as other races might. Naturally found in medium-sized groups or small colonies, Batlings like dim-to-dark places unless exposed to brighter areas at younger ages. Batlings don't grow to old ages, but live fairly long for smaller creatures (growing to about 25 years at latest, and maturing into adult at 5 years of age).

Batling Traits

Echolocation, Gliding, and Enhanced Climbing are some of these little creatures' abilities.

Echolocation

Batlings can be (and commonly are) known for the especially keen hearing, with the assistance of a feint clicking noise they make with their mouths. They can use something similar to echolocation to gain advantage on Wisdom (Perception) Checks when using this feature, but only through this method, all other rolls are straight rolls.

Glide (Psuedo-flight)

Through many years of adaptation, Batlings aren't able to hold a steady flight for long, if at all. Instead, they are able to maintain a glide by not moving their arms up and down in a flapping motion, granting them... pseudo-flight. This glide is what they commonly use to travel from the tops of trees, cliffs, caverns and cave ceilings to the floor for food and resources as needed.

Enhanced Climbing

Batlings have adapted to the ability to nestle themselves atop cave ceilings and high elevations using their "built-in-climbing-gear." Batlings have a larger finger on each hand that acts as a climbing hook and anchor into most rocky (or harder-to-penetrate) surfaces. These appendages are fairly strong and sturdy, allowing a the Batling to potentially free-hang as long as they desire, or nestle themselves against the surface they're attached to.
