Homebrew Automaton Species Details
Automatons are a mysterious race of sentient machinery, forged with metal and magic. They were all designed and constructed by a "Creator," and given the gift of free rein over their own thoughts and actions.
Automatons in the world strive to fit in with the world around them, though they usually find it difficult due to the nature of their being. They watch and adapt sentient beings around them, hoping to one day join their ranks as equal instead of an outcast.
In some very rare cases, certain Automatons have dedicated themselves to adapting so heavily that they actually gain the gift of life, becoming a real breathing person. Nobody is sure how this happens, and as such the race of Automatons and their mystical "Creator" are a complete mystery.
Automaton Traits
Your Automaton character has the following racial traits.Ability Score Increase
When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one of those scores by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy.
The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You’re free to follow those suggestions or to ignore them. Whichever scores you decide to increase, none of the scores can be raised above 20.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and the DM decide is appropriate for your character.
Size
Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 ft.
Constructed Nature
You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits:
- You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage. You are immune to disease.
- You can don only armor with which you have proficiency. To don armor other than a shield, you must incorporate it into your body over the course of 1 hour, during which you remain in contact with the armor. To doff armor, you must spend 1 hour removing it. You can rest while donning or doffing armor in this way. While you live, the armor incorporated into your body can’t be removed against your will.
Creature Type
You can choose between a Humanoid or a Construct. Automatons mingle into society, constantly trying to fit in with the living creatures of the world. Miraculously, they may even gain the gift of life in their adaptation to fit in. You choose whether your character has already adapted or not. As you progress with this character, you can change between the two creature types given there is a reason the character would want to change.
Construct:
- You are a Construct.
- You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe, nor are you physically able to.
- You don't need to sleep, and magic cannot put you to sleep. Instead, when you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.
- If you are unstable, a creature that casts the mending spell on you immediately stabilizes you. If the spell is interrupted before completion, you go back to being unstable with the same death saving throw results you originally had.
- When your head is submerged underwater, drowning rules still apply to you as you start to short circuit.
- You gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
Humanoid:
- You are a Humanoid.
- You can sleep with your integrated armor on without any of the drawbacks that sleeping in armor usually gives.
- You gain proficiency in one skill of your choice.
- You can share some of your newfound life to objects around you. If you are touching an inanimate object, you can choose to take 1 point of damage (no action required) and give the object temporary sentience. You gain the ability to communicate to that object in a limited manner, being able to ask a single question before your life essence disappears from the object.
- As an action, you can shift your appearance to turn into a more Humanoid version of yourself. During this time, you can flawlessly pass off as a normal Humanoid, with no traces of being a partial Construct whatsoever, so long as you do not do anything a normal Humanoid could not. This change in appearance is not magical, so it cannot be detected by magic of any kind. Your new appearance can last for up to 1 hour before you revert to your normal appearance, and you need to finish a short or long rest before using it again. You can also revert as an action before the 1 hour mark, keeping any time you had left.
