Homebrew Mothfolk Species Details

The often called "mothfolk" are thought to be a divergent species of wood elf that have come to look a lot like moths. It's theorized that the ancestors evolved into this form after years of seclusion in the dark forests around the world, for this fact, very little is known about this race in terms of their culture and their everyday lives.

Physical description:

Along their backs flows a hypnotic cloak-like wing structure that when fully opened can have a span of over twice their own hight, that said, the average height for a mothfolk is around 4ft and the average weight is a staggering 11 pounds. Their whole skin from the outside is covered in a thin short layer of densely clustered hairs that help them keep their bodies warm, these hairs are a lot longer and denser around the neck, wrists and hips though it's belived that it only seems to be that way for purely social-aesthetic purposes. On their heads you can see a pair of fluffy, silky antennae that act as an enhanced sensory organs that also serve as a sexual display, as males have bushier antennae than females. Mothfolk also possess an extra pair of arms that come slightly under their armpits and slightly pointier feet compared to the theorized ancestor.

All in all, the only resemblences to wood elves these creatures still have is their humanoid body plan, face and hands while also possessing hair.

A notable body phenomenon is their constant shedding and regrowing of wing scales that create "Moth dust", most disreguard this as simply waste  but some think mothfolk use their "moth dust" to manipulate magic around them for their own gain.

Abilities and effects:

Mothfolk are extremely nature-dependant creatures that tend to be responsible for lots of things related to maintaining the forests they inhabit, from healing nearly any form of life with their moth dust based spells.

Most mothkin are keen on anything magic as long as it has any connection to their species, other forms of spellcasting seem inherently foreign to them, another effect of their isolation from other people. Though it should be noted that from the few mothfolk who've made themselves aparent to the public one could assume the kind of spells they create with the dust are very close in terms of functionality to more widespread spells.

A spell that comes from their own bodies unconsiously is the ability to inflict a plethora of "status effects" based on the pattern of their wings, some mothfolk have large eye like colourings capable of charming or frightening those who stare at the pattern for too long though, often only a quick glance is required to be caught up in it's strong influence.

Racial traits:

Most of the mothfolk's advantages come from their general anatomy, seeing as they are very fine tunned creatures to the specific conditions they live in.

Flight.

All young mothfolk can use their wondrous wings to fly, this being their most used method of transportation. In turn, they have lost most of their bipedal agility. At most these beings can get up to altitudes of around 140 feet, though most of the times they get that high they carried away by the wind and end up injured or dead from an uncontrolled descent. You can only fly for 1 day before needing a short rest.

Enhanced senses.

Mothfolk use their antennae for a deep enviromental analysis of their surroundings, giving them proficiency in the perception skill

Exotic appearence.

Mothfolk have a pretty unique look to them, being very emotive with their antennae, intimidating with their cloaks, and friendly with their puffs of fluff around certain areas, increasing their charisma score by 3.

Experience with fauna.

Living in foresty enviroments has given the mothfolk an exceptional connection to the natural wildlife of the planet. +1 point in animal handling and nature rolls.

Wondercloak.

Your cloak-like wings have a hypnotic effect on anyone who looks at it, letting you camouflage in almost any enviroment as long as you are still. +1 point in stealth rolls. Getting anything above 12 on a performance check will let you flash your wing patterns in a general direction, if any creature happens to gaze into your wings they get temporarily affected with either Charmed, frightened or Stunned for a full active turn (a turn where the affected can act).

Moth dust magic.

With your constant shedding of wing scales you always have a nice supply of moth dust at your disposal to cast moth based magic from. Gain +2 points in arcana when casting moth based spells.

Extra-sensitive eyes.

Your eyes are built to receive as much light as possible in dark forests. You have fully clear night-vision.

Nocturnal.

Being a nocturnal species you get more sluggish during the day time or in bright places. Lose -1 point of acrobatics and athletics in said conditions.

Light sensitive.

Bright lights will break your focus and stun you for 1 minute.

Fragile.

Decrease your constitution score by -1 when in cold temperatures (below 5ºC).
