Homebrew Münna (Mothfolk) Species Details

Münna, or colloquially referred to as "mothfolk", are small moth-like humanoids. They are covered in a soft fuzz, have antennae, a second pair of arms, and large wings that can be pulled down like a cloak. Their hair and wing colors are limited to white, black, and grays; however, their wings feature patterns unique to their original clan. Münna are a primarily nocturnal race - both from a cultural perspective and a physical one. Most Münna place a great emphasis on respect to the moon, the stars, and the night as a whole and religious individuals pray to deities related to them. Physically, their eyes are well-suited to the dark and thus are sensitive to bright lights. Mothfolk don't have much in the way of physical prowess but well make up for that with their keen minds and natural affinity for the arcane.

Münna tend to be reclusive, forming cities of their own instead of mingling with other races, although it's not uncommon for them to live among others in smaller towns. Education and the pursuit of knowledge are key pillars of their culture; those living in Münna cities often leave once they reach adulthood to explore the world and study abroad - known as "The Pilgrimage". They will return years later to share their newfound knowledge with the community. Some of the greatest historians and professors are mothfolk, and having one as a teacher  is often seen as good luck. Müunna make excellent scholars, priests, spellcasters, and healers.

Münna (Mothfolk) Traits

Nocturnal, sensitive beings bursting with natural curiosity and knowledge.

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom score increases by 2, and you can choose between an increase of 1 for either Intelligence or Charisma.

Age

Münna reach maturity at 10 years of age and rarely live longer than half a century.

Size

Münna average between 3 to 4 feet tall and weigh about 40 pounds. Your size is Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Flight

Your moth wings allow for limited flight and you have a base flying speed of 20 feet with the ability to hover. Your wingspan is equal to twice your height. There must be a wide enough space for your wings in order for you to fly. You can fly for a maximum of 1 hour, either at once or in small spurts. Once you reach your limit, you cannot fly again until you take a long rest.

You are unable to fly while carrying more than half your body weight. You are also unable to fly in heavy rain or if your wings are soaked and must wait for them to dry. Your wings are considered dry after 8 hours, or after a short rest.

Superior Darkvision

Due to your moth heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Sunlight Sensitivity

You have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.

Fragile Physique

Due to your small stature, lack of muscle, and light weight, you are unable to wield heavy weapons or don heavy armor.

Extra Limbs

You have a second pair of arms, which are smaller and weaker than your normal arms, but that can still carry out tasks with precision. Those arms can't wield weapons or shields, nor perform somatic components of spells, but can hold and use a spellcasting focus or any other small object, weighing up to 2 times your Strength score. As a bonus action on your turn, you can use your extra limbs to interact with one additional object or feature of the Environment during either your movement or action (as described in page 190 in the PHB).

Moth Magic

Your fey ancestry gives you inherent magic that plays to your moth nature. You know the Dancing Lights cantrip. You can also cast either the Guiding Bolt or Faerie Fire spell once per long rest. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Voice of the Moth

Münna are able to communicate simple and complex ideas with Small or Tiny insects.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Münnala. Münnala is a very soft and flowing language, often described by other races as being "singsong". Many bards learn their language so they can add Münnalan ballads to their repertories.
