Homebrew Aquafarian Species Details

Merfolk shifters are born of the sea from an egg laid by their mermaid mothers.  Every once in a generation a rare sub-species of mermaid is born, one which has the ability to alter the lower half of their body to go from a mermaid tail to fully formed human legs.  The shifting process is painful and takes a while to complete at early ages but is able to be mitigated later in life.  Being of the sea and being part mystical creature these unique creatures due have an extended life span of a few centuries with one such individual living to 1000 years old.  A mermaid is a rare sight but a Shifter is even more rare with only a few sightings ever happening on the mainland as most shifters tend to stay with their pods for their whole lives.  The few that have been seen have very distinct features and characteristics such as shiny opalescent hair and/or eyes and are slightly scaly in various spots on the body, as well as various piercings.
