Homebrew Bospterran Species Details

Bospterrans are small, bat-like folk. Their appearances range from the more snubby-nosed, smush-faced bats to the longer, more vulpin-faced kind. They possess small fangs and can often drape their wings over them similarly to a poncho. Normally standing around 2-4 feet tall, some have been spotted as small as 1.5 feet and tall as 5. They are normally slim in build, with tufts of fur around their necks and large ears. Their wings, attached to their arms, are often mistaken for a poncho as they drape around them similar to one. As a result of this and their slim nature, they tend to wear tight clothes and refrain from jewelry, though that's not to say they won't wear them on occasion.

Most Bospterrans are mischevious but ultimately good-natured, generally falling in chaotic good and chaotic neutral categories. Despite this, their dexterity makes them good as thieves for those who go against the more positive customs of their race. They hold a belief in a deity of their own alongside the Amaranthine - Chirodessa, a Bospterran Goddess of Bounty and Music.

Bospterran Traits

Good Listeners

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2 and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age

Bospterrans are born with shorter lifespans than most humblefolk, similarly to Jerbeens, Grungs and their kin. They age similarly quickly, maturing at at 6 years, and live up to around 60 years old.

Size

Bospterrans are nimble creatures of varying sizes usually weighting between 40 and 100 pounds, with light bodies for flight and glides. This helps them also squeeze into tight spaces for resting and hiding. Your size is small or medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30ft.

Echolocation

Bospterrans have extremely sensitive hearing. As a result, when they speak or otherwise make noise, they can detect objects and creatures in a small radius around themselves. You have blindsight out to a range of 60ft while you are not deafened.

Enhanced Senses

Due to a Bospterran's excellent hearing, they are able to pick up things easier than most normal folk. You gain proficiency in either the Perception, Investigation, Insight, or Survival skill.

Lifesteal

Bospterrans, while finding it taboo, have a trick up their sleeve for dire situations - they may steal the life of their foes through their blood. When you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can use your Bonus Action to heal yourself for 1d6 hit points. This healing increases by 1d6 when you reach 5th level (2d6), 11th level (3d6), and 17th level (4d6).
You can't use this trait again until you finish a long rest.

Deafened Detriment

Bospterrans rely heavily on their hearing. When one is deafened, it knocks their senses loose and renders them near-blind. While deafened, you are also considered blinded for the duration. In addition, any thunder damage or sufficiently loud noises (Such as a thunderous smite in an enclosed space) deafen a Bopsterran until the end of their next turn.

Wing Flap

As a bonus action, you can use your powerful winged arms to propel yourself upward a distance equal to half your movement speed. You can use it in conjunction with a regular jump, but not while gliding.

Glide

Using your winged arms, you can slow your fall, and glide short distances. When falling you can use your reaction to spread your arms, stiffen your wings, and slow your descent. While doing so, you continue to fall gently at a speed of 60 feet per round, taking no fall damage when you land. If you would fall at least 10 feet in this way, you may fly up to your movement speed in one direction you choose, although you cannot choose to move upwards, landing in the space you finish your movement. You cannot glide while carrying heavy weapons or wielding a shield (though you may drop any held items as part of your reaction to spread your arms). You cannot glide while wearing heavy armor, or if you are encumbered.

Climbing Expert

You have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, as well as one language of your choice.

Alignment

Bospterrans are looked upon in many different ways by both birdfolk and humblefolk. As such, they are used to a sense of discrimination, but push past that to try and fit in. Your alignment is either Chaotic Good or Chaotic Neutral.
