Homebrew Blobgoblin Species Details

Physical Description

Being descended from ordinary goblins who had to adapt to the ocean depths, blobgoblins share many of their physical traits with the blob fish. To call this a disgusting visual is an understatement; each one has a high muscle to bone ratio, just barely having the skeletal strength to stand on land. While on land, a blobgoblin has the body type of a fleshy gumdrop, muscles always drooping with gravity. In the water, these mucles contract to show a much more typical looking goblin, albeit with pink skin and piranha-like eyes. There are no easily visible distinctions between gender.

History

The history of blobgoblins is cloaked in mystery. There was a large flood and some believe the leader of a renegade group of goblins made a deal with the demon lord Juiblex, sacrificing their solid form for the sake of survival. Others believe they are simply a result of rapid evolution. Either way, this information is lost to time and not even the oldest blobgoblins know the answer.

Society

Blobgoblins have a culture with a large focus on lethality. Most blobgoblin camps take place in underwater caves and the ocean floor, choosing a home based on how dangerous they can make it to other aquatic creatures of the deep. Blobgoblins, similarly to their land-based kin, trap their home base heavily and often have hunting animals such as piranhas and smaller sharks. As far as hierarchy, blobgoblins choose a leader based on the most dangerous among them and generally do their bidding. This is the only determining factor for them role-wise. More than anything, blobgoblins are ruthless creatures, with the only exceptions being those who adventure or go on land. When a blobgoblin goes on land, they are seen as a traitor and coward to all other blobgoblins and generally struggle to understand the ways of land-folk.

Blobgoblin Traits

Having been treated to the deep ocean and potential demon influence, blobgoblins greatly resemble most goblins within the deep ocean. However, outside of the water the lack of water pressure causes their mostly muscle-based bodies to look gelatinous, akin to a blobfish. They have rather weak bones and on a good day could pass off as a very bloated goblin.

Blobgoblins reach adulthood at age 8 and live up to 60 years.

Alignment

Blobgoblins are typically Neutral Evil, caring only for their own needs. Some may stray towards a good or neutral alignment though this is rare.

Size

Blobgoblins are between 3 and 4 feet tall and weigh between 50 and 90 pounds. Your size is Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 25 feet and you have a base swim speed of 40 feet.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You cannot discern color in darkness, only shades of grey.

Limited Amphibiousness

You can breathe air or water, but you need to be submerged in water at least once every 4 hours to avoid suffocating.

Minor Amorphism

Due to your thin bones and blubbery nature, you can squeeze into an area half your size and can move through this area treating it as difficult terrain. You cannot take the Attack, Dodge, or Dash action while squeezing in this way.

Blubbery Resistance

As a reaction to being hit with an attack, you can choose to gain resistance to non magical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage until the start of your next turn. You can use this ability once per long rest.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Goblin. In addition, when submerged in water you can communicate simple ideas with aquatic creatures within 120 feet of you via waves in the water.
