For an instant, You summon an avatar of Death - a ghostly humanoid skeleton clad in a tattered black robe and carrying a spectral scythe. It targets one creature you choose and sweeps its spectral scythe through it, dealing 1d8 + 3 slashing damage plus 1d8 necrotic damage.
A creature slain by this spell can't be restored to life.

Posted Aug 4, 2021I wanted to create a 1st level wizard spell that did necrotic damage so that my Scribe Wizard can choose it as the damage type for his spells.
This does about the same damage as Magic Missile and similarly does not require any d20 rolls (just like the Avatar of Death from the Deck of Many Things).
Magic Missile does minimum damage of 6, average of 10.5, maximum of 15.
Vision of Death does minimum damage of 5, average of 10, maximum of 19.
It has shorter range than Magic Missile (60 feet, the flying speed of the Avatar of Death) and can only target one creature.
I made up for these shortcomings by adding the effect that it perma-deaths whoever it kills. I imagine this will rarely affect gameplay but makes the spell feel more deathy and gives people a potential reason (however uncommon) to choose it instead of Magic Missile.
