Describe key words about a topic. This spell creates 1d4+1 rats made of force energy that run from your hand towards written materials, such as books or scrolls.
When a rat of force hits a written material containing one or more key words, the rat is absorbed by the item, which starts glowing with yellow light. The item hit in such way will remain glowing for up ten minutes or until dispelled.
The spell can locate a specific book or scroll or written material known to you, as long as you have clear recollection of its name or the author's or even its contents. And only if the said item is really present at the place, since the spell cannot create the item out of thin air, only locate it within range.
Similar to Locate Objects spell, this spell can't locate an object if any thickness of lead, even a thin sheet, blocks a direct path between you and the object.

Flavorful spell! I feel it should be limited to bards and wizards, and perhaps warlocks.
Yeah, this is version 1, I think. We are considering it too for later versions. So far, so good?
Maybe upcasts could make more rats?
Are the Rats constrained to 30 feet from you or can you summon them within 30 feet?
only 30 ft?!? that wouldn't help in a library, maybe make it a couple hundred and possibly allow you to know the rough direction each of the rats went in.
Great for an Arcane Trickster!
I've got two Artificers with the Sage background. THEY WANT THIS SPELL!
Personally, I agree with you two, extend the range to a much larger area, add a rough sense of direction of the rats that get absorbed by the items, and allow upcasting for more rats.
I would just add an HP to the rats, so that they aren’t as overpowered in dungeons and enemy territories while still making them useful in large libraries of friendly creatures. Also, by switching the rats from being made of force energy to spirits (Celestial, Fey, Etc.), the rats can be then be countered by Hallow, which is useful as a DM or Player.
I like it!
Question:
- Why multiple rats? Or why a specific number of multiple rats? As I understand it, the number of rats does not seem to influence the success of finding the tome or not. Therefore, one rat is sufficient (or at least the description should be more vague like "a handful of rats").
Suggestions:
- Instead of having an automatic success (assuming the relevant book is in range etc), perhaps each rat can make an investigation check (with advantage?) using the caster's spell casting modifier. Casting at higher levels increases the number of rats. The more rats, the higher chance of success.
- Regardless if you keep/discard the automatic success, have each rat able to find a relevant book. In other words, if you summon three rats, you can find up to three matching books in range.
The last sentence should read: Similar to [spell]locate objects[ /spell], this spell can't...
Spell names should not be capitalized, and should be linked with a tool tip.
Ah yes, I have wished many times for spectral rodents of mysterious origin to find a tome for me while browsing the shelves of a grand library.
Right?
