You use the synergy of life and death to heal or drain the life force of an enemy. You can choose a creature in range and you must make a spell attack against your spell save DC. If succeeding the target regains 1d3 health points, if you fail nothing happens wasting your action. If you want to do the opposite and use this spell for combat purposes, the creature you target must make a constitution saving throw, if failing they take 1d3 necrotic damage and have disadvantage on any attack, check or saving throw for 1 round.
