This is a desperate and dangerous ritual that is rarely used. Typically, the Arcane Transmogrification Ritual is used to save a creature’s life when it has been mortally or otherwise very seriously wounded and death is imminent. When no alternative healing is available (or adequate) to save the creature’s life, the ritual can tap into the inherent power of a magic item and transform it into living muscle, bone, sinews and other tissues. These transformed living tissues are grafted into an injured creature’s body to save it’s life in and arduous and painful process. The transformation can often result in unsightly, even grotesque, body modifications when performed by an unskilled practitioner.

The ritual completely consumes the magic item, which is essentially grafted into the subjects body, and becomes prosthetic living tissues. The appearance of the resultant prosthetic tissues can vary wildly depending on what material the magic item is comprised of. The grafting process is excruciatingly painful for the subject who will usually pass out during the ritual. In some cases the subject may simply die from cardiac failure.

The risk of death is equal to 5% less 1% per level of the caster.

The grafting process will heal up to 25% of the subject’s injuries (i.e.: up to 25% of the subjects max hit points) and stabilise mortal wounds. Remaining injuries can then heal through natural healing. However, the site of the grafted tissues will continue to be uncomfortable and cause low level pain and discomfort. The metaphysical energy contained in the magic item powering the ritual determines the extent of the healing it can provide.

Item classification Healing provided Example
Insignificant 2% - 6% Normal item enchanted by permanent duration spell
Minor 5% - 10% Basic +1 or +2 item, or simple magic item
Significant 10% - 15% +3 item with enchantments, or special item
Powerful 15% - 25% +4/+5 item or multifunction magic item

At the DMs discretion certain magic items are unable to be transmuted by this ritual.

The body modifications caused by this ritual are not easily undone. To heal the subject back to their natural state a healer must use a healing spell of at least 4 level. The magic item used to power the transmutation is typically lost and irrevocable. Less scrupulous and unethical practitioners have been known to use the ritual as a form of torture. Once the graft is complete the subject must be careful to avoid magic dispelling effects which could be potentially fatal.
