Using your mechanical knowledge, you create a mine with a hidden effect that will trigger if an enemy steps near it. Choose a space near you in which you can hide your mine. Until the spell is triggered or dispelled, the mine is considered hidden. Any creature that would attempt to find the mine must be actively searching for traps and make a Wisdom (Perception) check against your Spell Save DC in order to find it.
Unless you take an action to remotely dispel the mine, at which point it becomes an inert hunk of metal, if any creature not designated at the time of casting enters a 10 foot radius of the mine, it will be triggered.
If the mine is triggered, it releases a fount of acid in a 30-foot radius around it, coating everything around it. Creatures within the radius must make a Dexterity saving throw or take 3d8 Acid Damage and cannot regain hit points for 1 hour, or until they take 10 minutes to wash the acid off manually. On a successful save, they take half as much damage and can recover hit points as normal.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each level above 2nd.
