If the target fails a Wisdom saving throw, they can't make themselves understood using speech. No matter how hard they try, they utter only nonsense sounds.
If the victim attempts to cast a spell that requires a verbal component, they may make a Wisdom save to form the necessary syllables, but must do so every time they attempt to do so throughout the duration of this spell.
The subject's ability to write is unimpeded.
At Higher Levels: If cast using a spell slot of 5th level, speaking causes physical pain. In any round where the victim attempts to speak, the victim suffers 3d6 necrotic damage. This damage occurs even if the victim successfully casts a spell with a verbal component, as described above.
