You trace a semicircle in the air and a shimmering barrier envelopes the target from all sides. With a loud blare akin to a hammer hitting an anvil, the magical sphere deflects the attack and reflects half of the damage to the attacker. It then violently shatters with a blast that sends the attacking creature 10 feet backwards. If the creature collides with a wall or another piece of solid terrain, it takes 2d8 bludgeoning damage. If it would collide with another creature, that creature has to make a Dexterity saving throw to evade or else they both take 1d8 bludgeoning damage and fall prone. If the blasted creature doesn't collide with anything, it is moved 10 feet backwards and has to make a Dexterity saving throw or else it falls prone.

Instead, if the taget was not attacked physically, the barrier protects it from a single 5th level spell that was aimed directly at it or from injurious influence of a single area of effect type of spell. It doesn't protect against a spell that doesn't require any kind of magical or physical connection between the spell's effect and the shielded target (e.g. Toll the Dead or Blindness/Deafness). The barrier doesn't reflect the damage and fizzles out shortly after absorbing the spell. The dissipated energy from the absorbed spell slips into the target that was protected, making it glimmer vividly and granting it +2 bonus to AC until the end of its next turn.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the shield reflects additional 2d8 damage to the attacker or absorbs a spell of the same slot level that the Baleful Aegis was casted.
