You touch a creature, draining its vitality to heal yourself. The target creature must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 6d8 necrotic damage and you gain knowledge of basic information about the target (name, age, race, class, and anything else your DM feels appropriate) as well as specific knowledge of one event the target witnessed in the last 24 hours (you may pick a specific event/time, or you may leave the choice up to your DM). On a successful save, the target takes half damage and you gain no additional information. You regain hit points equal to half the damage taken by the target.
You may choose to cast this spell on a dead creature so long as it has been dead for no longer than 24 hours, gaining hit points and information as normal. The 24 hour period from which you can learn about a specific event is determined by the time the spell is cast, not the time the creature died. Knowledge can only be gained of events the creature itself experienced while alive.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above the 4th. In addition, if you cast the spell using a spell slot of 5th or 6th level, you may learn of an event which the creature witnessed in the past week. If you cast the spell using a spell slot of 7th or 8th level, you may learn of an event which the creature witnessed in the past month. And if you cast the spell using a spell slot of 9th level, you may learn of an event which the creature witnessed in the past year.
