You and up to eight willing creatures link hands in a circle and project your astral bodies into the inner psyche of one of you, whom the others must know very well. The material body you leave behind is unconscious and in a state of suspended animation; it doesn't need food or air and doesn't age.
Your astral body resembles your mortal form in almost every way, replicating your game statistics and possessions. The principal difference is the addition of a silvery cord that extends from between your shoulder blades and trails behind you, fading to invisibility after 1 foot. This cord is your tether to your material body. As long as the tether remains intact, you can find your way home. If the cord is cut--something that can happen only when an effect specifically states that it does--your soul and body are separated, killing you instantly.
A creature's inner world is perfectly unique to that creature and is usually divided into four layers: conscious, memories, subconscious, and primal thought. The conscious mind is immediately accessible and modifiable by most other enchantment spells, and this spell bypasses it entirely. You and your companions (including the target of the spell), are put into the creature's memories upon successfully casting the spell. In this level, the creature's individual memories can be accessed and viewed through a portal such as doors or windows. Suppressed or modified memories will be blocked off by chains with a padlock, or another similar visual representation. Physical changes to this environment (such as damaging the structure or memory portals or by casting a spell) will physically alter the creature's memories, as if the creature had failed its saving throw through modify memory, which can allow the creature to recall such suppressed memories. Each time the creature's memories level is accessed by the spell, the layout changes. Spells that teleport a creature or cause it to move to another plane do not function in an inner world.
The subconscious level can be accessed through the portal that leads to the creature's first memory. This level is labyrinthine and massive, and represents the creature's emotions and fears, and contains visual representations of spiritual forces that may be influencing that creature. The subconscious actively rejects the intruders excluding the creature they belong to, even against that creature's will. A creature's silver cord can be cut by any hazards or creatures created by the subconscious on this level. A creature's worst fear is the greatest danger on this level. Changes made to this level are temporary. Each time the creature's subconscious level is accessed by the spell, the layout changes, and its visual aesthetic is altered based on the creature's general emotional state.
The entrance to the primal thought level is guarded by the creature's worst fear. It consist of a single object, which may be realistic or abstract, surrounded by an endless expanse of emptiness or set in the center of an otherwise impenetrable room. The object is a visual representation of a creature's entire worldview, its alignment, its ideals, and its flaws. The creature to whom the primal thought belongs cannot enter this level or otherwise see the object. All creatures in this level take psychic damage equal to the Wisdom score of the creature whose psyche is being explored at initiative count 20 each turn they spend on this level.
Spells of the enchantment school may have unusual or unpredictably enhanced effects based on which level of the creature's psyche the spell is cast.
When this spell is cast at 8th or 9th levels, the target creature's inner psyche can be permanently modified on the subconscious and primal thought levels, respectively. A creature whose worst fear or primal thought is destroyed will have it replaced by another one, which will be decided by the DM if a reasonable subsititute is not placed in its stead.
