In order for this spell to be cast, the user must utter the words "Fus Ro Dah." This spell cannot be casted otherwise. The functionality of this spell depends on the completion of those words being uttered. The first and second words of Unrelenting Force ("Fus Ro") will stagger enemies caught in its wake for a short amount of time and deal 1d4 damage. When the third word is used, the target is thrown backward by 20ft and temporarily loose (unable to control one's limbs), inflicting additional environmental damage upon impact. If thrown over a cliff, the victim will take 1d4+falling damage respective to the cliff's height. This can be avoided if the target succeeds a constitution saving throw, which would result in the victim being staggered and taking 1d4 damage.
Large creatures, such as dragons dragons, trolls ,and giants will not be thrown but will be staggered. If a dragon is using a breath attack at the Dragonborn and this Shout is used, the attack will be interrupted and the dragon will become staggered. Ethereal creatures, children, and Dragon Priests are not affected at all by Unrelenting Force. It is also possible to stop Unrelenting Force with a ward; Necromancers and Conjurers often employ this tactic.
