This spell creates an undead servant. Choose any number of piles of bones or corpses of Huge or smaller creatures within range that are not Undead, Construct, Ooze, Fiend, or Elemental type, the CR of each creature you raise may not add up to greater than 1/2. Your spell imbues the targets with a foul mimicry of life, raising them as undead creatures. The target raises as a zombified version of itself if a corpse is chosen or a skeletal version of itself if a pile of bones was chosen, and gains the following effects:
The creature type becomes undead, it gains dark vision 60 ft, and if raised as a zombie it gains Undead Fortitude. The target loses all defensive abilities it had in life as well as any special attacks it had but retains the natural weapons, weapon proficiencies, and armor proficiencies it had in life. It can understand the languages it knew in life as well as language you understand, however it cannot speak. The creature loses any spellcasting ability it had when it was alive. After it is destroyed, its remains cannot be reanimated.
On each of your turns, you can use a bonus action to mentally command any creature you made with this spell if the creature is within 60 feet of you (if you control multiple creatures, you can command any or all of them at the same time, issuing the same command to each one). You decide what action the creature will take and where it will move during its next turn, or you can issue a general command, such as to guard a particular chamber or corridor. If you issue no commands, the creature only defends itself against hostile creatures. Once given an order, the creature continues to follow it until its task is complete.
The creature is under your control for 24 hours, after which it stops obeying any command you've given it, or permanently if the coin component is used. To maintain control of the creature for another 24 hours, you must cast this spell on the creature again before the current 24-hour period ends. This use of the spell reasserts your control over a number of creatures you have animated with this spell whose CR is equal to 2, rather than animating a new one.
When this spell is cast on a humanoid creature, you may choose to create a variant skeleton or zombie as listed below:
Bloody Skeleton (CR +1)
Burning Skeleton (CR +1)
Fast Zombie (CR +1/2)
Plague Zombie (CR +1)
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the CR sum for the creatures you can animate or reassert control over increases by 2 steps. for each slot level above 3rd. Each of the creatures must come from a different corpse or pile of bones.
*The symbol must be important to the caster.
**The cost of the coin doubles for each size category above medium, and when the target is destroyed the coin is as well.
