You pretend to cast a different spell, trying to bait an opponent into Counterspelling it. The spell to be mimicked can be of up to 2 levels higher than the level this spell is cast at, and you must know it, but don't need to have it prepared. While casting, you can choose to perfectly mimic all of the Verbal and Somatic components expected for the faked spell and can also choose to consume Material components, but none of those conditions are strictly necessary for the casting of this spell.
If the casting of this spell is not interrupted, the spell slot and any components used are consumed and a harmless minor thaumaturgic effect of your choosing takes place.
If the casting of this spell is interrupted by a Counterspell or similar effect, the spell slot and components are still consumed, but you can cast a Cantrip as a Free Action until the end of your current turn.
