The worst rumors have a way of corroding the minds of those who hear them, and they spread like a contagious disease. Make a melee spell attack against one creature. On a hit, you whisper an enchanted lie to the target, they take 2d8 psychic damage, and their mind becomes twisted with lies. On a miss the target still takes 2d8 psychic damage, you take half this amount of psychic damage, and the target suffers no other effects.
Whenever a creature whose mind is twisted with lies speaks or casts a spell with a verbal component, they immediately take 2d8 acid damage and each creature within 10ft of them must make a Charisma saving throw. Creatures who fail this saving throw take 2d8 psychic damage and their minds also become twisted with lies. A creature who is deafened automatically succeeds on this save. After each time a creature whose mind is twisted with lies takes acid damage from this effect, they may repeat their Charisma saving throw, ending this effect on a success. Once a creature makes this save successfully, it becomes immune to this effect for 24 hours.
The effects of this spell last for 1 minute after you initially cast it, then the spell ends.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the psychic damage and acid damage each increase by 1d8 for each slot level above 3rd.
