Think of a specific object(s) that are known to you, as long as you have seen them up close--within 30 feet--at least once. The abacus displays the exact number of those objects within the spell's range. If the objects are in motion, you know if they are moving out of your range.
If you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the spell's range increases to 100 feet. If you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the range is 300 feet. If you use a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the range is 1000 feet. If you use a 7th level spell slot, the range is one mile. If you use a 8th level spell slot, the range is 10 miles. If you use a 9th level spell slot, the range is your entire plane of existence.
Using a spell slot of 5th level or higher grants the ability to count specific creature(s) that are known to you, so long as you have seen such them up close—within 30 feet—at least once. If the creature(s) you thought of are in a different form, such as being under the effects of a polymorph spell, this spell doesn’t count them.
This spell can't count anything if the abacus is hindered from moving, if the abacus cannot count high enough, or if you don't know use to use an abacus.
