You attempt to interrupt a creature in the process of casting a spell of a casting time of an action or a bonus action.

Use the following formulate to calculate your Contested Counterspell check and compare it with the one of the creature whose spell you attempt to interrupt:

Contested Counterspell check = 2 * spell level + 1d20 + spell attack modifier + other boni

  • On a failure, the target caster's spell succeeds and takes effect.
  • On a success, the target caster's spell fails and has no effect.
  • On a tie, the target caster's spell fails, has no effect, and both you and the target caster must roll on the wild magic surge table.

The loser of the contest then takes 1d6 psychic damage for each difference in spell levels used.

If an additional creature casts Contested Counterspell at an ongoing contest, they instead just give one of the originally contending spellcasters advantage on their check.
