You bind the fate of one willing humanoid to your own. For the duration neither creature can be killed if the other is still alive and on the same plane. You remain conscious even if your hit points reach 0, but you are still subjected to death saving throws like normal.
Once one creature drops to 0 hit points its body becomes more fragile. Each attack after that will maim the body and can make it unfit for life after the spell ends. If both creatures die while the spell is in effect they can only be revived by a true resurrection spell as their bodies cave in.
Instant death is prevented, but the situation can still hinder the creature's movement. A heavy boulder or suffocating can restrain a creature, while the body remains intact after a disintegrate spell.
The spell stops prematurely if you start a long rest. Alternatively a long rest is interrupted when casting this spell.
