When you touch the wand to the object, you learn precisely what ingredients, materials, formulas, and techniques were used to create a object, mundane, alchemical, or magical. The information magically appears in your mind, which may not be able to comprehend it. You must succeed on a DC 16 Intelligence (Arcana) check or the information is lost.
The process is somewhat destructive. Mundane items, alchemical items, and single-use magic items (such as potions) are consumed in the casting. Magic items with charges and permanent abilities may cause backlash as the Weave asserts itself; if you fail your Intelligence (Arcana) check you must also make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw, taking 4d8 psychic damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.
Note: This spell always fails when used on an artifact.
