By touching a willing creature, you can bond it as your familiar. A familiar bonded by this spell must fit the following requirements:
- It must be tiny or small.
- It must be a beast, fey, fiend, elemental, dragon, or plant.
- It must have a challenge rating no higher than ¼.
- You must, of course, actually find the familiar itself and convince it to accept the bond; unlike Find Familiar, this spell will not produce it for you.
The creature cannot be magically-compelled to accede to the bond in any way, or the spell fails.
You can have only one familiar at a time, regardless of how you obtained them. If you gain another one through any means, the one you obtained using this spell is released.
A familiar bonded with this spell works similarly to Find Familiar in most respects, and counts as your familiar for the purposes of that spell; you may temporarily dismiss and re-summon them, deliver touch spells through them, communicate telepathically with them, and share senses with them, all as described in that spell. However:
- The familiar is not compelled to obey your commands, and may refuse you the use of any of the abilities described above.
- If the familiar dies, they are truly dead; they cannot simply be retrieved by casting this spell or Find Familiar again. If the familiar's spirit agrees, you may be able to use Find Familiar to rebody their mind and spirit in one of the forms that can be summoned by that spell, but in that case, all of their game statistics will change to reflect their new form and they will otherwise be governed by the rules of that spell.
