You magically analyze a single non-magical, mechanical device, and your spell reveals its intended purpose. The target can make a Charisma saving throw to avoid the spell's effects.
Note that what a contraption is supposed to do is not necessarily the same as what the contraption will do; contraptions are notorious for reacting in unexpected ways. While this spell tells you how a device works; it does not tell you how to operate it.
In addition to the complex machines typically associated with gnomes, this spell can be used to analyze mechanical traps and locks (granting advantage to you if you subsequently make a Dexterity check with thieves tools to disable or unlock them), clockwork monsters and devices, even legendary items like the Apparatus of Kwalis
