You draw a line of salt on the ground within range, then recite the incantations, imbuing it with an age-old warding magic. The salt line can either be a 10-foot-radius ring, or a single line no more than 30 feet across. Alternatively, you can spend 10 minutes drawing a salt line along every windowsill and doorway of a single building to ward it. An area is warded only as long as every piece of the salt line remains unbroken, or until the spell ends.

Any elemental, fiend, spirit, or undead creature of CR 6 or less is affected in the following ways:

  • That creature can't willingly touch a salt line or enter the warded area by nonmagical means. If it attempts to use teleportation or interplanar travel to do so, it must first succeed on a Charisma saving throw.

  • Targets within the cylinder can't be charmed, frightened, or possessed by the creature.

Creatures of those types of a higher CR are affected in the same way but can attempt a Charisma saving throw to overcome the ring's magic once each hour.

When you cast this spell, you can elect to cause its magic to operate in the reverse direction, preventing a creature of the specified type from leaving the area and protecting targets outside it.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the duration of the spell increases by 1 hour for each level beyond 2nd.

* - (a large handful of salt and a ring of cold iron worth at least 20 gp, which the spell consumes)
