You perform a special rite which infuses an item you can carry with holy or unholy power. An object blessed with holy power becomes consecrated while an object perverted with unholy power becomes desecrated instead.
Burying (or erecting) a consecrated or desecrated object consecrates or desecrates the ground in a 30-foot-radius around it, consuming the original item. Consecrating a previously desecrated object or ground overrules the preceding effects and vice versa.
Consecrated object. A consecrated object is considered magical. Any subdued magic is restored to the item and it is magically preserved from normal weathering.
Desecrated object. A desecrated object is also considered magical but other magic stored within a desecrated object becomes subdued. Additionally, a desecrated item weathers at an accelerated rate.
Consecrated ground. Celestials standing on consecrated ground have advantage on all saving throws. Subdued magic is restored to the area and buildings standing on consecrated ground are magically preserved from normal weathering. Undead and fiends that enter the area for the first time on a turn or start its turn there must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 2d8 radiant damage. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage.
