The simple act of parrying or deflecting a blade could determine whether you die or not so it’s always a good idea to know some basic sword maneuvers.
If an enemy makes a successful attack against you, you may roll a 1d4, and if you land a 4 (or higher) make a damage roll for any weapon you have, and whatever that damage is will be the amount of damage taken off for the enemy’s attack.
Also, the weapon must already be drawn, if it is not then you simply pull out the weapon as a reaction instead of blocking the attack. And DMs/GMs, use common sense; a dagger won’t block a great sword.
* - Whenever an enemy makes a successful attack against you within melee range you may use this as a reaction.
