This spell causes a blade of crackling energy to appear in the caster's hand. The caster may select the length of the blade, from 1 to 3 feet--the effects are the same regardless. The sword is audible to 10 feet, and easily visible even in bright light.
The enchanted blade can be used to attack in two ways. It may be swung in melee combat, or it may be used to fire a bolt of crackling energy from its tip to a range of 30 feet. Either use requires an attack roll. The caster is considered proficient with the sword, and may add her Spell Attack Modifier to her attack roll. The spell has a maximum duration of 10 minutes, although it may disappear earlier depending on use (see below).
The enchanted blade has a total damage dice pool of 1 die per level of the caster. Before rolling to hit, the caster determines how many of those dice will be used for the current attack. Those dice are subtracted from the total remaining (regardless of the success of this attack). Each die spent inflicts 1d6 points of force damage. The caster adds her spellcasting ability bonus to the damage, and the target may make a Constitution save for half damage.
The blade disappears at the end of 10 minutes, if the caster dispels it (no action needed), or if the last of the damage dice are used in an attack.
