You gain the service of a familiar. A spirit chosen from a pile of bones, a corpse, or other bodily remains from an organic creature that are of a size suitable for creating a tiny, undead creature (at the DM's discretion). You produce strands of magical energy from your hand(s), or casting focus, that connects you to the undead creature you create from the remains. Appearing in an unoccupied space within range, the familiar has the statistics of the chosen form, though it is considered a tiny undead instead of a beast.

Your familiar acts independently of you, but it always obeys your commands. In combat, it rolls its own initiative and acts on its own turn.

When the familiar drops to 0 hit points, it disappears, leaving behind no physical form, just a pile of dust, or a rotting lump of unrecognizable flesh and goo.

While your animated familiar is within 100 feet of you, you can communicate with it telepathically. Additionally, as an action, you can see through your familiar’s eyes and hear what it hears until the start of your next turn, gaining the benefits of any special senses that the familiar has. During this time, you are deaf and blind with regard to your own senses.

You can’t have more than one familiar at a time. If you cast this spell while you already have a familiar, the current familiar turns to dust.

The familiar's remains take on the statistics below. It will attempt to defend its master at all costs, even when it is ill-advised to do so. Its unlife has no meaning except to serve.

It can only engage in actions that the creature can realistically have performed in life. For example, an animated mouse skeleton will not be able to carry a heavy weapon. A recently deceased bird may still be able to fly, but a long-deceased bird will have lost that ability with the decaying of its feathers. What tasks the creature can perform is up to your DM’s discretion.

The animation ends if:

  • The creature leaves the range of you
  • At the end of 24 hours
  • If the creature drops to zero hit points
  • If you cast the spell again on another creature
  • Or if you use your action to dismiss it.

If the creature is reduced to zero hit points the corpse is destroyed and that creature can no longer be animated using this spell.
