While casting this spell, you imbue the item you used for the spell's material component with magic. It holds the spell until it is touched by anyone but you or the creatures you designate when you cast this spell. When the item is touched, the creature that touched it falls into a catatonic state as its soul leaves its body and enters the item. While affected by this spell, their body doesn’t need to breathe, eat, or drink, and it doesn’t age. While their soul inhabits the container, they are aware of their surroundings as if they were in the container's space. They can speak to magic users within 60 feet telepathically. They can't move or use reactions. The only action they can take is to project their soul up to 100 feet out of the container, either returning to their living body (and ending the spell) or attempting to possess a humanoid's body.

The affected creature can attempt to possess any humanoid within 100 feet of you that they can see (creatures warded by a protection from evil and good or magic circle spell can't be possessed). The target must make a Charisma saving throw. On a failure, the trapped soul moves into the target's body, and the target's soul becomes trapped in the container. On a success, the target resists the efforts to possess it, and the trapped creature can't attempt to possess it again for 24 hours.

Once they possess a creature's body, they control it. Their game statistics replace the statistics of the creature and they can only benefit from its racial traits and bonuses instead of their own. They retain the benefit of your own class features. If the target has any class levels, they can't use any of its class features.

Meanwhile, the possessed creature's soul can't move or take actions at all and is in a supressed dream-like state until they can either return to their vacated body or the body is dead.

While possessing a body, the trapped soul can use their action to return from the host body to the container if it is within 100 feet of them, returning the host creature's soul to its body. If the host body dies while they're in it, the creature dies, and the trapped soul must make a Charisma saving throw against their own spellcasting DC. On a success, they return to the container if it is within 100 feet of you. Otherwise, they die.

If the container is destroyed or the spell ends, the soul immediately returns to their body. If the body is more than 100 feet away from them or if the body is dead when they attempt to return to it, they die. If another creature's soul is in the container when it is destroyed, the creature's soul returns to its body if the body is alive and within 100 feet. Otherwise, that creature dies.

When the spell ends, the container is destroyed.
