You wave your quill in the direction of an area. Over the next minute, the quill writes an exhaustive list of all creatures and objects contained within the space. The resulting inventory includes the name, quantity, location, condition, and fair market value for every non-magical object listed. Creatures are listed by appearance, not by name (e.g., "Two orcs," not "Greenfang and Torgoth"). The inventory can be queried verbally, and on command the text can be arranged alphabetically, by category, size, or any other easily discernible property, with appropriate heading and subheading appearing instantly.
- Magical items are visually described, but the name and magical properties are not described unless Identify is first cast on the quill.
- Items inside a locked object are not inventoried (though the locked container is) unless combined with a Knock spell.
- Hidden items use the spell casters spell save DC as an investigation roll vs the objects DC to detect.
Subsequent castings of this spell in nearby areas can be appended to the same list. Casting at higher levels may add effects to the same inventory.
When cast as a 4th-level spell or higher, add one of the following effects:
- The area of the spell increases to a 500' cube
- Magic items' properties are revealed as with an "identify" spell,
- Locked containers are unlocked as if by a "knock" spell (and may be subsequently re-locked after the inventory is complete if the caster desires)
- Traps are revealed as with the "find traps" spell.
When cast as a 6th-level spell, add one of the following effects:
- The area increases to a 1,000' cube
- The names, races, and home plane of creatures within the area are revealed. This effect can see through illusions such as "alter self" or shape changes by dopplegangers or polymorph spells. (Arcanist's Magic Aura can still fool the inventory.)
- The resulting scroll updates itself magically whenever the spell area's contents change. This effect lasts for 1 week, or unless dispelled by the caster or a "dispel magic" spell cast on the inventory sheet or the area itself.
