The caster attaches a tag or stamp bearing the clearly written name and location of the intended recipient onto an object weighing no more than 5 lbs. The object levitates 3 feet above the ground, and proceeds to float toward the recipient. It travels at a speed of 4 miles per hour, preferring to take well-marked and traveled roads, highways, and postal routes. It will avoid direct obstacles to its path, carefully weaving around traffic and crowds as needed, reaching a height of up to 10' as needed. It will proceed along its path unless physically prevented or unless thepackage is destroyed. If the addressee is inside a building or behind a gate or wall, it will repeatedly bounce itself against the door until either the spell ends or a way has been made for it.

The spell ends when someone touches it after it has reached its intended destination  — though that person need not be the intended recipient. The spell also ends if after 31 days it is unable to reach its intended destination. When the spell ends, the objects floats gently to the ground. If it arrives at its destination, a creature may refuse to touch it and instead say "Return to Sender." If the caster has included a return address tag, the object will begin the journey to location listed, though the spell may end before it completes the trip.

The spell does not seek out the recipient specifically, or know if the addressee (or address) has moved, died, or changed status in any way. It cannot find hidden locations, only places that are public knowledge. General addresses such as "The castle on the hill near Lorton" work, though locations requiring personal knowledge such as "My favorite tree in Glendale" or "The coffee shop where I met Savi that one time" do not. Locations known only to a few (such as "Grimwold the Ruthless' Hidden Lair" or "The Thieves Guild's Hideout") only work if the caster has been there before in person and knows a mundane route to them.

This spell is frequently used in conjunction with a Glyph of Warding, a Magic Mouth, an Arcane Lock, and other abjuration spells to help ensure its safe delivery. If cast as a ritual, it takes no additional time to also cast an additional an illusion or abjuration spell that normally has a casting time of less than 10 minutes. For each spell level above 3rd, the object may weight an additional 10 pounds OR the duration may be extended by 1 week.
