Summoning

You summon fey spirits that take the form of beasts and appear in unoccupied spaces that you can see within range. The caster may choose one of the following options for the CR of the beast they want to appear:

  • One beast of challenge rating equal to your level or lower
  • Two beasts of challenge rating equal to 1/2 your level rounded down or lower
  • Four beasts of Challenge rating equal to 1/4 your level rounded down or lower

Each beast is also considered fey, and it disappears when it drops to 0 hit points or when the spell ends.

The summoned creatures are friendly to you and your companions. The summoned creatures take their initiative after you as a group. They obey any verbal commands that you issue to them (no action required by you). If you don't issue any commands to them, they defend themselves from hostile creatures, but otherwise take no actions.

Note: I think we all know how annoying the Conjure animals spell is at this point, so I had an idea and wanted to take a crack at fixing the spells main issues while maintaining its power. First, I removed upcasting, and removed the ability to summon more than 4 creatures because the sheer amount of creatures bogs down combat in addition to being a pain to track which isn't fun for anyone. Second, I made perfectly clear that the players could choose the creature, not the DM because I have no idea how that started. Third, your beast takes its turn after the casters. Finally, I made the CR of the beasts you summon equal to your level or a fraction of it.
