Effect: When you cast this spell, you gain the ability to perceive small details and disturbances within an area. You can investigate a specific object or location within a 30-foot radius of yourself and gain insight into any footprints, tracks, fingerprints, scorch marks, man-made tools, or other disturbances within the terrain.
To use the spell, make an Intelligence (Investigation) check. The DC of the check depends on the complexity of the terrain or surface being investigated, as well as any magical illusions or disguises present.
If you succeed on the check, you can discern the following information:
- The presence of any footprints, tracks, or scorch marks in the area, including the direction and approximate age of the disturbances.
- The presence of any man-made tools or structures within the area, such as buildings, bridges, or walls.
- The presence of any fingerprints or other distinguishing features on objects within the area.
If you fail the check, you cannot discern any useful information about the area being investigated.
Note: This spell can be useful for investigating crime scenes, tracking down missing persons or objects, or for identifying hidden or disguised structures. The accuracy of the spell depends on the caster's skill level and the complexity of the terrain or surface being investigated, as well as any magical illusions or disguises present.
When cast at a higher level of 2nd or higher the DCD check decreases by one per level.
For example, investigating footprints in soft soil might have a DC of 10, while investigating tracks in a rocky area might have a DC of 15. Investigating a hidden door disguised by an illusion might have a DC of 20 or higher, depending on the strength of the illusion.
