This spell summons a friend to help out. It appears where you designate and acts immediately, on your turn. They attack your opponents to the best of their ability. You can direct it not to attack, to attack particular enemies, or to perform other actions.
You choose which kind of friend to summon, and you can change that choice each time you cast the spell.
A summoned friend cannot summon or otherwise conjure another creature, nor can use any teleportation or planar travel abilities. Friends cannot be summoned into an environment that cannot support them.
The level in which this spell is cast determines the friend(s) that can be summoned:
Cantrip: One CR 1/4 or less
1st Level: One CR 1/2 or less [OR] 1d3 CR 1/4 or less
2ed Level: One CR 1 [OR] 1d3 CR 1/2 or less
3rd Level: One CR 2 [OR] 1d3 CR 1 [OR] 1d4+1 CR 1/2 or less
4th Level: One CR 3 [OR] 1d3 CR 2 [OR] 1d4+1 CR 1 or less
5th Level: One CR 4 [OR] 1d3 CR 3 [OR] 1d4+1 CR 2 or less
6th Level: One CR 5/6 [OR] 1d3 CR 4 [OR] 1d4+1 CR 3 or less
7th Level: One CR 7/8 [OR] 1d3 CR 5/6 [OR] 1d4+1 CR 4 or less
8th Level: One CR 9/10 [OR] 1d3 CR 7/8 [OR] 1d4+1 CR 5/6 or less
9th Level: One CR 11/12 [OR] 1d3 CR 9/10 [OR] 1d4+1 CR 7/8 or less

Posted Mar 4, 2020Seems rather overpowered. Lvl 4 summon elemental gets your ONE CR 2 creature (or two at CR 1). This one summons ONE CR 3 (or 1d3 at CR 2)
Not to mention putting summoning at far lower levels...

Posted Apr 17, 2020hey thanks for commenting! i wasn't expecting any feedback! I appreciate it.
we balance it out in a couple of ways:
1) this is the only spell the character can cast
2) the deck of friends (pool of summonable creatures) is limited to non-sentient creatures at lower CRs
we're doing a lot of work outside of game to make this workable. we're predetermining the limits of this spell off table so everything runs smoothly in game. for example we're working on predetermined "maneuvers" that involve X creatures and produce Y result. the player isnt planning on using the creatures as beatsticks, but even if they did i could adjust the encounter in game.
this is a pretty unconventional spell since its for a pretty unconventional player. i mainly posted it on here for ease of use, i wasnt really expecting anyone to actually use it lmao
thanks for checking it out and leaving feedback! I'm starting to feel like a real dm now, it only took 3 years lol

Posted Apr 17, 2020Very cool. Definitely one for GM assistance.
My son wanted to summon things as well, so I came up with https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/406530-conjure-tiny-elemental as an attempt to create a cantrip that would summon _something_. If you check it out it's more a summon spell in name more than actually summoning a real creature.
