Description: You whisper arcane words and touch a magic item or an area with lingering magical residue. As part of casting this cantrip, you must make an Arcana or Persuasion check. The DC for the check is determined by the DM based on the complexity and strength of the magic involved.
On a successful check, you gain insight into one of the following aspects related to the magic:
-
What do you do?: You learn the primary function or purpose of the magic item or gain an understanding of the general effect or purpose of the magical residue in the area.
-
Who last used you? (Description only): You get a brief impression or description of the individual who last used the magic item or the presence that left the magical residue. This description may include physical appearance, race, or any notable distinguishing features.
-
When were you last used?: You gain a general sense of the timeframe or duration since the magic item was last used or when the magical residue was left in the area. This information could be relative, such as "recently" or "a long time ago."
-
What school of magic?: You discern the general school of magic associated with the item or the source of the magical residue, such as Abjuration, Conjuration, Evocation, etc.
You can only gain one piece of information from the options listed above with each casting of the cantrip.
At Higher Levels: The cantrip's effectiveness and the complexity of the information revealed can be enhanced by higher spell slot levels. The DM can determine if and how the cantrip scales based on the character's level or the level of the spell slot used.
Remember to consult with your Dungeon Master to ensure the cantrip fits appropriately within your campaign and that the DCs and information revealed are balanced for your game.
