You ward a creature other than yourself within range against attacks. Until the spell ends, any creature who targets the warded creature with an attack or harmful spell must first make a wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature must choose a new target or lose the attack or spell.
This spell can protect a warded creature from area effects that would require a saving throw, such as a fireball. However, the enemy creating the effect does not need to make a wisdom saving throw. Instead, the warded creature can choose to automatically succeed on the save and take no damage. If used in this way, this spell’s effects end and the creature is no longer warded.
If not used in the above way, the spell remains for the duration, regardless of whether the warded creature makes an attack, casts a spell that affects an enemy, or deals damage to another creature.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th or higher, you can target an additional creature for each spell slot above 4th.
