Detection
For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and you learn its school of magic, if any.
The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.
if you have to be able to see the magical item anyway why would it matter if it's blocked by 1 foot of stone? it'll also be blocked by one millimeter of stone
Does Detect Magic indicate magic on a Construct? If so, what school?
I think that depends on the type of construct, (golems yes; modrons no), but that's really a personal call. As for what school, it's almost certainly Transmutation since that's what Animate Objects is.
try to avoid letting them get a wand of detect magic.
The first sentence does not depend on the magic thing being visible, only the second sentence does. So, if it's not visible, you will still know there is SOMETHING magic within the 30-foot radius, you just won't know where.
See this from Jeremy Crawford:

"The detect magic spell senses active magic. It doesn't detect past magic. For example, a golem was animated by magic—as if by a jolt of lightning—but that magic isn't now present. The golem, therefore, doesn't detect as magical, unless other magic is active on it."
Gracias por la información
As has been said in prior comments, the "seeing" part only matters for the specific location & spell school parts.
If there is a magic item behind 1 mm of stone, the spell will still tell you that there is magic within 30 ft of you.
So a spellcaster who gets a "yes there is magic" ping on the spell but doesn't see any auras should then start searching the area in order to find what's setting off the spell. (Via an investigation check or the like)
You can swap out invocations on level up too.
Sorry for replying to such a late post
MINOR SPOILERS FOR DRAGONLANCE SHADOW OF THE DRAGON QUEEN
In the first test of high sorcery, it is said specifically that the player can use Detect magic to see the aura of the invisible walls
EPic!
THIS. Most PCs will have magic, and if that is true, ANY casting of Detect Magic will ping from the moment they cast the spell. So, it really only works for stuff they can see. In plain sight. Unless they want keep all magic items 30 feet away from them. Yeah, they don't.
