You evoke a fiery blade in your free hand. The blade is similar in size and shape to a scimitar, and it lasts for the duration. If you let go of the blade, it disappears, but you can evoke the blade again as a bonus action.
You can use your action to make a melee spell attack with the fiery blade. On a hit, the target takes 3d6 fire damage.
The flaming blade sheds bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for every two slot levels above 2nd.

Alright, scoured the internet and couldn't find an answer. Can you use the smite spells on Flame Blade? I know you can't Booming/Green-Flame with Flame Blade, but can you add smite spells?
nope. I haven't looked at all of the "smites", but the ones i did see "melee weapon attack" while this spell says "melee spell attack", which is pretty much the same reason (i assume) for booming blade/green flame blade. Though in my game, I might allow smite for those (BB and GFB) because they are using the paladin's normal physical attributes for the attack. And since this is specifically a "Druid" spell, even though it's a weapons, that would be a hard sell in my game to allow. But per RAW, no.
Now with wildfire it can be alot of fun🤷‍♂️
No, it still sucks with Wildfire. The level 6 ability for Wildfire Druids won't affect Flame Blade, because casting the spell Flame Blade doesn't deal any fire damage. It's only when you use your action later that you'll deal fire damage.
its "when you cast a spell that deals fire damage" so flame blade falls into that category, as it is a spell that deals fire damage.
The spell creates a sword. The spell does not deal fire damage.
You don't roll any dice when you cast the spell. There's nothing to add the D8 to when you cast the spell.
It's not like Spiritual Weapon where you make an attack as part of casting the spell. It's not like Booming Blade where you make an attack as part of casting the spell. Making an attack is not part of casting Flame Blade.
Now that Tasha is out, this spell is also for sorcerer. I’ve got a hill dwarf dragon sorcerer that will be making good use of both this and dragon breath. Dragons breath hits more opponents and scales better. This spell is a melee attack (so it’ll proc absorb elements) and it lasts longer. They both have their niche on a sorcerer but it’s pretty shit on a Druid.
gets really interesting with circle of wild fire once you get your elemental
As a Dm I would allow it but only the other way around. The flame blade would have to be the primary hand and the off hand would be the other. Feats would make this moot.
No, moonbeam is con save, wis wouldn't even make sense?
Wish this was on the Alchemist list. but I also wish that alchemical savant would apply every round which it wouldn't..
Would be a really cool spell otherwise for 'em
Can this be used for multi attack or is it DM discretion?
By that logic draconic sorcerer's elemental affinity feature doesn't apply to things like dragons breath or investiture of flame. the specific wording of the feature is "you gain a bonus to one damage roll of the spell." It doesn't have to be a roll that occurs immediately when you cast the spell, it doesn't even have to be the first roll because otherwise it would say that it applies to the first roll.
Isnt it available to Sorcerer on Tasha's Cauldron
My half orc druid, circle of stars, with unbreakable spell concentration is gonna be a damn Jedi /Sith with this thing :D Maybe will even add "telekinetic" hehehe
If the Druid is inside of a "Darkness" sphere (Spell) and cast the Flame Blade, is the Darkness dispelled? Or the Flame Blade negated? Or both work, but the Blade does not illuminate?
******* says this is also available to sorcerers. who's wrong?
Elemental Affinity doesn't apply either; that only works on spells that deal damage when you cast them, that's why it says "When you cast a spell" right at the start. That feature is specifically intended to not apply to spells that deal damage over multiple rounds; you have to keep casting to keep receiving the benefit.
Personally I don't think Flame Blade is too bad without stacking, it just isn't usually your best option in most situations, but if you're determined to play a melee Druid then it's not a bad option to have. The main problem with Flame Blade is that it compares quite poorly to Shadow Blade:
Given that Druids can't take Shadow Blade I don't think Flame Blade is terrible, but it's better at lower levels, and mostly suits very niche builds; if you wanted to play a Druid as a bit of a tank for example. It might actually work okay with Circle of Spores since that circle can gain temporary hitpoints without wild-shaping, while dealing extra damage using their ranged reaction.
It's available to Sorcerers if your DM is allowing the Expanded spell list from optional class features in Tasha's guide
This is also avalible to sorcerers so why can't I select it in my spells list do I have to buy tasha's first or something?
