“There’s two things that make a good lightning rod: being tall, and being made of metal. Most people can’t control the being tall part, but if you’ve got a good weapon on you, the other requirement’s as easy as pie.” - Arlus Licht, being asked about the spells he pioneered in an interview
When lightning damage is dealt within 60 feet of you, you brandish the lightning rod and draw the electricity towards yourself. The intended target of the spell takes no damage, and you must choose one of two options: either take the current into your own body by jamming the rod into the ground, taking half the damage that you absorbed, or make a ranged spell attack on a target within 30 feet of you by swinging the rod towards it, guiding the charge towards it and causing it to take ¾ of the damage you absorbed. If the attack misses, the charge arcs back towards you and you take the full damage.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the range at which you can draw in lightning damage and the range you can redirect it in increase by 10 feet per level above 1st.
